I enjoyed reading this book – it wasn’t the best written story, but it depicted an honest and candid story involving two men in love when the gay liberation movement was just picking up steam. It goes directly to my favorite shelf.
This book is almost certain to make any reader a little uncomfortable; good literature does that. Set in the year leading up to the Montreal Olympics, we follow the life of an ex-marine Coach who begins very much in the closet, and who falls in love with a fodno runner left in his charge.
Betsy, valiant lesbian mother; Vince, angry activist seeking revenge; Chino, Vietnam vet with a wounded heart; and the secret child of Billy Sive. There, I’ve said it. So after your done cringing at the horrible treatment these men endured, imagine the impact of reading 40 years ago a genuine love story between two men who are portrayed as human. This period, where aids begins to make itself known in the gay community, is an interesting part of the story since as a reader you know how to read the signs and she describes well how it changes life for them.
This book was phenomenal.
Now, they actually publish gay novels that are good, instead of schmaltzy claptrap like this. It was their refusal to treat people as individuals which was so ridiculous yet so shocking. This book describes the discrimination and brutality suffered by gay people from the s to the s and in many ways it is like apartheid.
This is the ‘Long Awaited’ sequel, written 20 years later.

What is this novel? Is all I can say! Shows the overall decay of the fonddo during the 20 years from the 70’s to the 90’s and erieily foretells the future changes of the next 15 years.

Moreover the ending rubbed me horribly the wrong way. Patricia Nell Warren grew up on a historic ranch in Montana, spent many years working in the New York media, and has lived and traveled extensively in Europe. I found myself pulled into the runner mind, how they push their bodies to the limit for that extra second of time off their records.
